San Joaquin County has the second-highest concentration of transportation and warehousing jobs out of all metropolitan areas in the U.S., according to a 2019 report by the Center for Business and Policy Research at the University of the Pacific.
Amazon, Wayfair, Ashley Furniture and other e-commerce giants have flocked to the county because of its central location within the Northern California Megaregion, an urbanized zone that includes the Bay Area, Sacramento, the Monterey Bay Area and the northern San Joaquin Valley. As of 2016, it encompassed about one-third of California’s population.
San Joaquin County’s concentration of transportation and warehousing employment is second only to Laredo, Texas, an inland port on the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the report.
